Mother's Grammar Concerns

Notice how I saw Mother instead of Mom when I talk about grammar.  Mother thought my job as an ESL teacher was the best job a person could have, but sometimes, when I read their writing to her, she'd say, "That's not very good grammar."

So...today I'll just begin to share some of that.  But as I post what I consider poetry because of the turn of phrase, I'll provide a preface:

If I were writing in Korean/Chinese/Vietnamese/etc., I would be thrilled to be making only the "not very good grammar" errors my students are making.

I just spent 5 hours on campus with the other instructor who volunteered to help with anchors, which are the writing samples we choose to represent various scores from low not passing to excellent.

I'm far too tired to do anything more than copy (which I've done as faithfully as I can, fighting against spell check and grammar check), so here are some samples.  YOU can score:

Topic:  Three are many ways to get around the city.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of using public transportation?

Student 1:

There are many public transportation in many country.

They even are used as guiding for touists who

come some places for the first time.  So, tourists don’t have to

care about losting their ways.

To be specific.  Public transportation’s advantages

are that they always keep the road.

For examplel, Muni-49 always is driven mission St.

-Ocean St. by bus driver.  In my case, when I

Came here for the first time, I should have gone to CCSf.

Even though I didn’t know how to get CCSF,

through google searching map, I got the way to go CCSF.

And then, I walked to find bus top where muni-49\would arrive.  And I could go to CCSF with taking

muni-49.

The Advantages of second are “Saving CO2 from our planet.”

According to scientists, when we use public trnasportations, one person can plant one tree

per 40 km.  That means when we use or take

public transportations such as muni, taxi, bus,

subway…to go 40 km, we can save CO2 and

SO4, CO:  (they cause increasing temperature from

Earth) CO2, SO4, CO…can absorb by one tree.

Its quantity equals when we use public transportation

,instead of personal auto to go 40 km.

By stastics, thansk for public transportations, carbon gases

can save about 10 tons per one year.

It sames as planting 100 trees per a week for

absorb carbon gases.  Thus, we can save our earth

{from warmig earth}.

In contrary from public transportation’s advantages,

There are some disadvantages from public transportation.

As we know.  If we will take public transportations,

we must make sure “time”.

To turn on the bus, we must wait for the bus

until arriving.  When we missed the bus or

muni like as public transportations, we just wait to

next public transportations.  If we were unfortune,

We may wait for 1 hour to take public transportation.

Second, we have to pay fees.  When we don’t

have enough money to get public transpor

tations, Riding without paying fees is illegal.

By USA traffic regulations, Riding without paying,

people must pay 30 times fees. 

Exepting these disadvantages, I think

Public transportations have much more advantages than diadvantages.

When we use ublic transportations,

we can save earth from warming,

we don’t care about losting our ways and so on.

Thus, let’s try to take on public transportations.

I believe our small tryings will

change our world.  When one person

try to take public transportations, The guy is saving

our world.  Continue to one and 10 and 100…

Finally, we are owner in our world (because we consdier our world).

I think changing is created by our small things.
