Once home, I did the following assignments I gave myself:
--Contacted a counselor in DSPS about a student who wanted to add my High Intermediate Academic ESL class but couldn't because ...
a. his former teacher hadn't removed the Incompete he gave him in this course when he took it last semester.
b. his former teacher wrote to me saying that he desperately needed this student so that he would have the minimum number of students needed to keep his class open.
c. he couldn't find his former teacher
d. I got no response from his teacher (who nonetheless continued to send messages on the listserve).
e. All of the above
You guessed it. The correct answer is e, all of the above.
I want to help this student, but we're now at the last of our sixth day of the semester. The only reason I can discuss this student with his counselors is that I got written permission from him.
--Sent my High Intermediate Academic ESLstudents a message giving them the link another student had sent me for a 13-year-old named Rion Paige, who had overcome the obstacles of being blind and having arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which causes the joints in her hands to curve.

They probably know the show X Factor USA.
I also sent these students the words to a song that came up when another student asked about "the poor" without a noun. This song comes from a musical called Carnival.
The rich put cream on their berries. The rich drive
shiny black cars.
The rich go here, the rich go there.
It's close to the truth but far from fair.
The rich stay cozy all winter,
Stay cool the month of July.
But for all of the world, I wouldn't switch.
I'm glad I'm rich!
---Sent my High Intermediate Listening and Speaking students a link about the stork that came up when we were looking at a chart showing the number of bird species in Brazil, Ecuador, and Indonesia compared to in the USA. The bird was captured in Egypt, where they found an electronic device on its back and thought it was a spying device. The bird was put behind bars but after Egyptian environmentalists protested and explained that it was just a tracking device, the bird was released without charges--and eaten by local villagers. I also sent them the info that the greatest annual rainful is in Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, according to one source, where it rains an average of 460" or more than 1,145 cm. But another source says that's only the thrid wettest place in the world. I encouraged them to do their own research, but I'd settle for their checking and reading their CCSF e-mail and looking occasionally at our website:
---responded to the supervisor of a local PBS ESL project. She had encouraged me to write something for the ESL Insights blog she has but felt my piece was too long for the blog (of course!) and too long for her to edit. Because I'm a little bit nervous about keeping my students' privacy, I'm thinking of leaving only the brief summary of the situation and adding what the director of personal counseling told me when I interviewed her on Monday.
---
--Sent a response to a librarian about the designation we should use on the CDs I want on reserve for my listening and speaking students.
--Sent a message asking the Chair of our department about the Teach-In promoted by a small group of students who came into one of my classrooms and left a card promising 1 unit of credit for 1 hour of attendance at a Teach-In.
Now it's after 6:00, and all I've done is the fun stuff!
