I got an e-message from Jim Canning, who last wrote when I asked him about Saint Augustine. (I'll quote him on the saint later.) He said that they (the original NY cast) had a reunion of Grease in New York last weekend. He reminded me (though I didn't need reminding) that I was at the original opening of the show! He said, "You know all these people!" He also said that it was a wonderful weekend, "a perfect blend of nostalgia for a glorious past and and pride in a pragmatic present." He said he remembered taking me to Sardi's after the show "to hear the decidedly mixed reviews." I was then on my way to Spain. I remember reading the script and thinking, "Oh, dear, this is really dumb. It's going to be a real flop. But it's an honor to be in a New York play even if it is a flop." It went on to be the longest-running off-Broadway play, though that record has been broken. Here's another record--a recording of Jim singing, and I think he's very good! Now, of course, he's teaching Latin at a boys' school in Connecticut.
